  • There has not been a consecutive result between Coventry and Sunderland in 17 games going back to 2003.
  • Ipswich have the best Shots on Target % in the Premier League this season but are the lowest for shots.
  • Crystal Palace have won three of the last four v Spurs including the last two games at Spurs.
  • Five of the last seven league games between Liverpool and Arsenal have ended in a draw.

Premier League Gameweek 9 Summary

SATURDAY 12:30PM – CHELSEA v MANCHESTER UTD

Stats: Should be plenty of goals scored – Chelsea’s games have the highest % of games with over 2.5 goals (6/8) and Man Utd are one of only two teams left who have yet to keep a clean sheet (Ipswich are the other – the only team Man Utd have beaten this season). Man Utd have had the most shots on goal this season and have the third worst Shots on Target %. Man Utd won both games last season. Prior to that Man Utd had lost five in a row to Chelsea at Chelsea (D3 L2). Man Utd are unbeaten in the last five fixtures anywhere v Chelsea (W2 D3).

Verdict: Can Chelsea pour more misery on Manchester Utd, and just pour more on themselves. At the time of writing Michael Carrick was still in charge. We think.

Prediction: Chelsea 2 Man Utd 1

SATURDAY 3PM – COVENTRY v SUNDERLAND

Stats: There has not been a consecutive result between Coventry and Sunderland in 17 games going back to 2003. In that run, going back 13 games, every second game has been a draw regardless of venue. Going back to 1980, Coventry have only lost two of their last 19 home games against Sunderland – W12 D5 L2. Coventry are unbeaten in eight Saturday games v Sunderland where every second result was a draw. Both sides are currently two losses from two games v bottom 6 teams (at time of fixture).

Verdict: This smells like a six-pointer for relegation already.

Prediction: Coventry 0 Sunderland 0

SATURDAY 3PM – HULL v IPSWICH

Stats: Ipswich are currently W3 D1 L1 v current bottom 6 teams. Hull have won their only game v promoted sides. Ipswich are averaging the third most away goals this season and the most away goals conceded. Ipswich are dead last for net expected goals at -8.3, Hull are fourth worst with -4.7. Ipswich are unbeaten in their last five matches v Hull (W4 D1), prior to that Hull were unbeaten in 14 matches. Ipswich have the best Shots on Target % in the Premier League this season but are the lowest for shots. The three promoted teams are in the bottom three for that stat.

Verdict: A critical game for Premier League survival already, a loss in games between the promoted sides can be regretted months down the track.

Prediction: Hull 0 Ipswich 2

SATURDAY 3PM – BOURNEMOUTH v LEEDS

Stats: Between Europa League and the Premier League Bournemouth have won four in a row and by a combined 11-0. Both games between these teams last season ended in a 2-2 draw. Leeds have never lost to Bournemouth on a Saturday – W6 D3. Leeds have now failed to win in their last four matches – D3 L1 but only have one loss so far this season. Leeds have the joint-lowest number of games with over two goals scored in their matches with 2/8 along with Everton and Sunderland.

Verdict: Bournemouth are in decent form, Leeds always have a go, this is an underrated Saturday game.

Prediction: Bournemouth 1 Leeds 1

SATURDAY 3PM – MANCHESTER CITY v BRIGHTON

Stats: Brighton are undefeated in their last four games v Man City (W2 D2) – the draws coming for games at Man City. But also, Man City have never lost at home to Brighton – W13 D4. Man City are 2/2 against current top 6 sides (at time of fixture) this season, while Brighton are W2 L2. Both teams are averaging 2.5 goals per games against the top 6 sides, and Brighton failed to score last weekend v Liverpool.

Verdict: Arguably game of the round hidden away from UK viewers. One bonus of watching the Premier League in the middle of the night.

Prediction: Man City 2 Brighton 2

SATURDAY 3PM – BRENTFORD v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Stats: Nottingham Forest are averaging 3.0 expected goals per game away from home – a full goal clear of the next best team. Brentford are fifth best for xG at home with 2.2. Nottingham Forest won both of these games last season by two goals – 2-0 away and 3-1 at home. Forest have won the last two games at Brentford by 2-0. Brentford are W1 D2 against bottom six sides (at time of fixture) this season. In all four of Nottingham Forest’s away games this season, both teams have scored.

Verdict: Steady old Brentford will probably get the job done, as Nottingham Forest keep dominating stats but not scoreboards. But Forest are due, and they’d better do it before the manager gets sacked.

Prediction: Brentford 2 Nott’m Forest 3

SATURDAY 5:30PM – TOTTENHAM v CRYSTAL PALACE

Stats: Crystal Palace have won three of the last four v Spurs including the last two games at Spurs. Crystal Palace have won their only game v fellow London clubs this season while Spurs are W1 L1. Crystal Palace are the worst team this season so far for conceding more goals than expected goals against says, they are also fourth worst for scoring fewer goals than xG says they should have. Spurs are W1 D2 v current bottom six sides.

Verdict: The in-form Spurs can see the top half of the table now and had better prepare for the higher altitude. Crystal Palace lose and their manager is in real trouble.

Prediction: Tottenham 2 Crystal Palace 0

SATURDAY 8PM – ASTON VILLA v FULHAM

Stats: Aston Villa have won five in a row at home to Fulham, and this millennium their record at home to Fulham is W14 D5 L2. Aston Villa have lost their only game v current bottom six sides this season. Fulham have scored the equal fewest goals away this season with two in four games, but are also equal best for goals conceded away with three in four.

Verdict: After seeing off Man City at home for the fourth year in a row, Fulham should prove much easier, now that the season is more than six gameweeks old.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1 Fulham 0

SUNDAY 4:30PM – LIVERPOOL v ARSENAL

Stats: Liverpool (W10 D5) are unbeaten in 15 home games in the league v Arsenal. Five of the last seven league games between Liverpool and Arsenal have ended in a draw. In all four of Arsenal’s away games this season, both teams have not scored in the same game, if that makes sense. Arsenal have kept three clean sheets in four away games. Liverpool are W2 L1 v current top six sides while Arsenal are W1 L1. Arsenal are 2/2 on a Sunday this season while Liverpool are W2 D1 L1.

Verdict: This game is so important that it’s the only one in the Premier League this Sunday. A fascinating clash to judge where each team’s genuine title credentials. Arsenal of course have a lot more real deal in the bank this season.

Prediction: Liverpool 1 Arsenal 1

MONDAY 8PM – NEWCASTLE v EVERTON

Stats: The away team has won the last three games of this fixture regardless of venue. Specifically, Everton have won their last two games at Newcastle. Everton are unbeaten in their last seven Monday games v Newcastle (W5 D2). Everton’s last loss on a Monday to Newcastle was in 1955. Going back to the 2022-23 season, Newcastle have failed to win a Monday home game (D1 L2).

Verdict: Sometimes the best thing is not always saved for last.

Prediction: Newcastle 0 Everton 1
