Premier League Gameweek 8 Summary

FRIDAY 8PM – IPSWICH TOWN v NOTTINGHAM FOREST

Stats: Only three teams in the top four English Football divisions are yet to draw a game, Ipswich are one, their main rivals Norwich are another, and fourth-tier Bristol Rovers are the third. Nottingham Forest have lost just one of their last eight against Ipswich, winning six and drawing one. Ipswich have won the only Friday game between these sides at Ipswich. Nottingham Forest have the highest average expected goals away from home this season at 3.1 per game. Ipswich are one of just two clubs left this season to not have kept a clean sheet. Man Utd are the other. At least Ipswich are fifth for goals scored with Arsenal. Using Expected Points, Nottingham Forest should be fourth.

Verdict: Ipswich are looking like a side that may avoid relegation this time around. Although if they lose at home to second-last placed-Forest that might change.

Prediction: Ipswich 2 Nottingham Forest 1

SATURDAY 12:30PM – ASTON VILLA v MANCHESTER CITY

Stats: Aston Villa have won their last three games at home to Man City, keeping clean sheets in two of three of those games. Manchester City are third for shots on target this season while Aston Villa are last. Aston Villa are 12th in the table but have the fifth worst expected goals and expected goals against.

Verdict: Next in our series of games that don’t really matter is Aston Villa hosting Man City. Aston Villa look to have turned the corner now, scoring goals and winning games.

Prediction: Aston Villa 1 Man City 2

SATURDAY 3PM – COVENTRY v FULHAM

Stats: Coventry did the double over Fulham last time they were in the same division – the Championship in 2021-22. Coventry have lost just one of their last seven home games v Fulham (W5 D1 L1). Coventry won the last Saturday game between these sides in 2021 by 4-1, the last Saturday game before that was in 1968. Fulham have lost their only game v current bottom sides, while Coventry are W1 L1.

Verdict: A game that is right where it belongs: Saturday 3pm.

Prediction: Coventry 0 Fulham 1

SATURDAY 3PM – ARSENAL v EVERTON

Stats: Arsenal are undefeated in their last seven v Everton. Arsenal have lost just one home game to Everton from their last 32 games v Everton going back to 1997 – their record is an impressive W26 D5 L1. Going back to 1996, Arsenal’s home record against Everton on a Saturday is W10 D3. At any ground Arsenal won the last two Saturday games but failed to win the five before that.

Verdict: Three points for Arsenal. Tough run for Everton, they only lost their first game of the season last weekend.

Prediction: Arsenal 2 Everton 0

SATURDAY 5:30PM – CHELSEA v TOTTENHAM

Stats: Chelsea kept their first clean sheet of the season last weekend. It was also the first Chelsea game this season to feature fewer than three goals. Chelsea have won their last six games against Tottenham. Chelsea have also lost just one of their last 16 v Spurs (W13 D2 L1). Going back to 1990, Chelsea have lost just one of their last 42 home games v Spurs (W27 D13 L1). It’s just one loss in their last 21 at home on a Saturday v Spurs (W15 D5 L1). There have been 30 goals scored in Chelsea’s seven games so far, just 16 in Spurs games.

Verdict: Spurs’ one-game winning streak is in danger, going to a place and team that like to annoy them. Chelsea got their first clean sheet of the season last weekend and may well repeat the feat against Spurs.

Prediction: Chelsea 2 Tottenham 0

SUNDAY 2PM – CRYSTAL PALACE v NEWCASTLE

Stats: Crystal Palace are unbeaten in their last five home games v Newcastle (W2 D3) and have lost just one of their last 11 (W4 D6 L1). Crystal Palace are unbeaten in two Sunday games at home to Newcastle (W1 D1). Newcastle have the third worst expected goals and fourth worst expected goals against.

Verdict: One more loss and Newcastle might start living up to their pre-season relegation dark-horse tag. Crystal Palace are already there after the worst possible loss last weekend – flogged by arch-rivals.

Prediction: Crystal Palace 1 Newcastle 1

SUNDAY 2PM – HULL v BRENTFORD

Stats: Hull and Brentford last met in the Championship in 2019-20. Brentford won 5-1 at Hull that season. The only Sunday game between these sides ended in a draw. Both teams have drawn their only Sunday game this season. Hull haven’t won any of their last five games (D-D-L-D-L) but still sit ninth in the table.

Verdict: Tough game for both.

Prediction: Hull 0 Brentford 1

SUNDAY 2PM – LIVERPOOL v BRIGHTON

Stats: Liverpool have won their last three at home to Brighton, and lost just once in the last 12 games at home to Brighton (W8 D3 L1). Liverpool are unbeaten in the four meetings on a Sunday at any ground (W3 D1). Liverpool are W1 D1 L1 on a Sunday this season, while Brighton are W3 L1. Brentford’s only Sunday loss this season is a 4-3 defeat by Chelsea. Brighton have won their last four games by a combined 15-0.

Verdict: One wonders why Brighton aren’t favourites for this game. A win away at Liverpool will really give Brighton genuine top-four credentials, and (whisper it) title dark-horse status. Once Man City are wiped out that is.

Prediction: Liverpool 1 Brighton 3

SUNDAY 2PM – MANCHESTER UTD v BOURNEMOUTH

Stats: Bournemouth’s expected goals last weekend v Sunderland was 4.39, which is the second highest of the season. Man Utd hold top spot for singular gameweek expected goals after their 5-2 win over Ipswich. The last three games between these sides ended in a draw. Bournemouth are undefeated in their last six games v Man Utd (W2 D4). Bournemouth are W2 D1 from their last three visits to Man Utd, with scorelines of 4-4, 3-0 and 3-0.

Verdict: Anything less than a win will probably have the Man Utd fans fuming.

Prediction: Man Utd 1 Bournemouth 2

SUNDAY 4:30PM – SUNDERLAND v LEEDS

Stats: Sunderland’s expected goals total against Bournemouth last weekend was 0.09, which is the season’s worst effort for any team. The last two Sunderland home games v Leeds have ended in a draw.

Verdict: European football is really interfering with the traditional Super Sunday 4:30pm kick-off. And Sunderland’s survival in the Premier League.

Prediction: Sunderland 0 Leeds 2
